In the last few weeks both Iron Fist and Luke Cage have been annoyingly cancelled by Netflix. On the face of it this could be due to the critical reception of Iron Fist and also a lukewarm reaction to the second season of Cage. Daredevil season 3 has been met with critical acclaim, but it was ended in a way that it wouldn’t surprise people if follows suit. Jessica Jones‘ third season is planned, but can’t really be considered safe. Cheo Hodari Coker, the show runner for Luke Cage, had season 3 planned out and even Mike Colter himself had been talking about where the show would go.
However, this could be part of a larger plan from Disney to start bringing everything back from Netflix under their umbrella and setting up content for their upcoming streaming service.
It also seems like the end of The Defenders. However, imagine a New Avengers spin-off that deals with the street level heroes and also introduces new characters that fit that tone. A lot of people would love to see Moon Knight enter this way. We also suggested on Twitter that Spider-Man should get involved with the fight against Kingpin. This once would have seemed a bit far fetched, but with TV shows budgets only getting higher and higher, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that Tom Holland would get on board.
We already know that Disney are working on shows for their service, the only officially announced series’ are Scarlet Witch and Loki. Both Elizabeth Olsen and Tom Hiddleston will be reprising their roles. Of course people will be interested, but Disney could get a bigger response if say, Season 4 of Daredevil and Heroes for Hire were launched on Day One. The service then could be mixed in with Marvel Unlimited to counter the DC Universe app that has just been released.
This could just be a cynical man’s view of the cancellations, however Disney will definitely be working on some big surprises for the launch of the service. They’ll also have learnt lessons from the DC launch. It’s obvious that established characters would be the biggest surprise to make people jump on.
