Unless you haven’t been on Twitter in the last three days, you’ve probably seen the dazzling new trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse. In which a stellar cast portray the likes of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), Peter Parker (Jake Johnson), and The Kingpin (Liev Schreiber). But the stand-out for many was the reveal of a character very few expected to see; Spider-Gwen.

Created by Jason Latour and Robbie Rodriguez in 2014, Spider-Gwen made her debut in The Amazing Spider-Man comic series, Edge of Spider-Verse. The comics showed us a world (Earth 65, to be exact) where it was, in fact, Gwen Stacy who was bitten by a radioactive spider, instead of Peter Parker. She’s known to her public as Spider-Woman, and has become a huge fan favourite in the four years she’s been around.

We’ve seen a recent animated iteration on the small screen in Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man, where she was voiced by Dove Cameron. However, that aired on Disney XD and Into the Spider-verse will undoubtedly bring her to a wider audience, and those not too familiar with the comics. Academy Award nominee, Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit, The Edge of Seventeen), has taken on the role for Spider-Gwen’s official cinematic debut, due for release December 14th.

The directing duo behind acclaimed box-office success, The LEGO Movie, Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, have overseen production; so, we can assume Miles and Gwen are in good hands. “How many more Spider-people are there?” Miles asks as Gwen swings in. Well, boasting three that we know of so far and a refreshing animated style, we’ve no doubt Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse is something to get excited about.
