Lets kick off our first Throwback Thursday, by reviewing the 90’s classic, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

With a new reboot of the Power Rangers franchise coming our way, it seemed perfectly logical to review the cinematic brilliance that is the 90’s movie version of the hit TV series. It’s a fantastic piece of film… if you like cheesy, over exaggerated fight scenes, your favourite Rangers fight against the first version of Apocalypse and some top notch special effects.

Hopefully you read into the heavily laced sarcasm, but it’s a film that has an affectionate place in our hearts. It’s one that we’ve grown up with since being a child. On face value, it’s a terrible film. But since it’s steeped in 90’s nostalgia, we can’t help but love it. There’s next to no character development, and the villain wants to take over the planet purely to service the plot. Do we even dare mention the part where he slimes into a Hornet Zord and looks like a giant purple bogie?

The Rangers themselves are overreacting, silly teenagers; which is both hilarious and cringe-worthy at the same time. The side-villains come straight from the TV series and are ultimately only there to get Ivan Ooze into the plotline. It’s a shame to see loved characters from the show sidelined for the entire film, especially when they include someone like Lord Zed and literally stick him in a snowglobe.

Whilst it was never going to be an Oscar winner, there’s a lovable quality to the Power Rangers movie, one that makes it strangely re-watchable. We can’t help but love the updated armoured costumes from the show’s lycra based onesies. However, since the reboot is coming next year, we’ve got a new set of Power Rangers and outfits.
