We never thought we would get to write about this, but it’s rumoured that Marvel and Fox are in early discussions for a potential crossover – much the same as Marvel and Sony in regards to Spider-Man.
Fox, of course, hold the rights to plenty of Marvel’s most popular characters – including their entire roster of X-Men – so it’s always seemed really unlikely that we’d see these characters interact. The rumours come from Matt Key, the producer of the Fatman on Batman podcast, revealing the following to Collider:
“I’ve heard from a few of my sources, my little birds, that Fox and Marvel have kind of talked, but not really, but there’s interest on Fox. We’re years from that ever possiby happening, but I think that’s what it would take, is Fox joining hands with Marvel.” We’re not too keen on fully believing little birds, but this news is too exciting to not share.
Matt Key basically means that the rights won’t be given back to Marvel anytime soon, especially since the success of Deadpool and the X-Men franchise, so for a crossover to happen it would have to be the result of a partnership. It’s likely Fox have seen how well Spidey has worked out over at Marvel Studios so far and want a piece of that pie.
Imagine how complicated and expensive it would be to put the Avengers and the X-Men in the same movie together; it’d take years for it to happen. This means we’d never see Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine or Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, which is disappointing for fans, but we really couldn’t complain. Nobody’s going to boycott an Avengers vs. X-Men movie because a couple of actors weren’t present!
