Professional wrestling and comic books meet again, with BOOM! Studios working with World Wrestling Entertainment (you know, the WWE) to produce a range of comic books and graphic novels. The exact deals of the partnership are yet to be revealed but we’ve got our first look at John Cena, as illustrated by Jamal Campbell.

This isn’t the first time the WWE has found itself in comic books though. Valiant were the first publisher to act as the home of their comic book foray, releasing runs such as “WWF Battlemania”. We think comic books are a perfect platform for these wrestling stars to shine; they’re dressed in spandex and their personalities are almost always larger-than-life – plus they love to fight each other. Put that in a book with some flashy artwork and you just may have a hit.

Here at BOOM! we’re thrilled to be a part of WWE’s return to the comic book medium,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “The WWE Universe is a passionate fanbase, and we aim to provide them with the comic series they’ve always wanted — a series featuring their favorite Superstars and storylines, a series that highlights the incredible history of the brand. An authentic series that matters.

This isn’t the first time BOOM! have published licensed comics, they have a huge range to choose from – whether it’s Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers or Adventure Time, the LA-based publisher has a huge catalog that’s full of popular licensed titles.

BOOM! is one of the fastest-growing comic book publishers in the industry and their vision for the WWE brand showed us exactly why,” explains Casey Collins, WWE’s executive vice president of consumer products. “We were blown away by the level of detail and creativity and are confident the WWE Universe and comic book fans will agree.
