As hype builds for the announcement of Avengers 4 tile and the trailer, there is one title that Marvel should keep in their locker for further releases; Secret Invasion. Since the Captain Marvel trailer, fans have been excited about the Skrulls entering the MCU for the first time, as it would probably lead to this monumental storyline. I’ve gone on record that I am a huge fan of this story line so it may be surprising to hear me make a case against it however I think it’s one for the future rather than instant gratification.
One of the best parts of the Secret Invasion storyline was the suspicion that fell across all characters as they tried to figure out how deep the infiltration went and who had been replaced. Imagine this storyline played out over the next couple of phases in the MCU or even within the Disney streaming service that is coming in the next year or so. It could underpin the storylines as much as the threat of Thanos and the Infinity Stones have over the last 10 years, and would also be easier to integrate into the tv shows as it wouldn’t be as SFX heavy.
But, having Secret Invasion so soon after the “Snap” would cheapen the emotional impact of those deaths and the film could be retrospectively poorer for it. We also know that at the end of the next film, some big names will be moving on from the universe, so it could also be used to bring them back in if required. Picture the reaction if the post-credits scene of the next film was a close up of a dead hero turning into a Skrull, similar to the scene with Elektra in the comics. It would leave the audience shocked and also desperate for the next instalment.
If Marvel do decide to do Secret Invasion next, they’d easily do a good job of it however the biggest pay off would be to make it a long running mystery building up to a similar scale of Infinity War and (Redacted).
